About our Internship Program Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is the nation's leading advocate for trails and the only national organization devoted to converting unused railroad corridors into multi-use trails. RTC is a national champion for active transportation policy and a significant voice in federal legislation related to creating bikeable and walkable communities. RTC is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Help us connect communities to local trails! Since our founding in 1986, RTC has increasingly recognized how trails can play a major role in encouraging healthy, active living to combat diabetes, obesity and other health challenges. To do this, we need to not only create trails, but change habits by engaging the community in walking, biking and educational programs utilizing trails. Thus, our Urban Pathways Initiative (UPI) was launched in 2008 to improve personal health and improve quality of life in low-income urban communities. In California, we've focused our UPI resources in Los Angeles County (Compton and El Monte, so far), where we are implementing encouragement and beautification programs to create healthy, active communities. As a part of UPI, we create and distribute monthly calendars that spotlight organized physical activity events being hosted by local groups, such as bike rides, hikes, trail care days, and walking clubs. Our calendars are sent to community organizations and residents who have signed up to participate in our programs. We currently mail calendars to hundreds of participants in the San Gabriel Valley region. In October, we will begin developing calendars of activities for the Compton area as well. We are looking for a volunteer to help prepare the events calendars for mailing. This opportunity is ongoing, and your assistance will be requested during the last week of each month for 1-2 days, approximately 4-6 hours total. You will need to report to our office in the Financial District of San Francisco. With only two full-time staff members and one part-time staff member in our office, your contributions will be of tremendous help and will be greatly appreciated. Additionally, your work will directly reach hundreds of people, encouraging them to connect to their local trails and become more physically active.
Benefits: The position is unpaid, though volunteers will enjoy the benefits of working in downtown San Francisco, in a casual but professional atmosphere. Easily accessible by BART and Muni, the office is located in the heart of San Francisco's Union Square, surrounded by a variety of restaurants and shops. Nearby cultural attractions include the SF Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Gardens, Sony Metreon, and the trendy SOMA neighborhood and Mission District.
To Apply (Please use only one form of transmitting your resume; no phone calls) Send cover letter and resume to: Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Duke Ellington Building, Attn: Elton Clark, 2121 Ward Court, 5th Floor, Washington, DC 20037, E-mail: elton@railstotrails.org.
