About Our Internship Programs
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is the nation's leading advocate for trails and the only national organization devoted to converting unused railroad lines to multi-use trails. RTC is dedicated to connecting people and communities by creating a nationwide network of public trails. With headquarters in Washington, D.C., and offices in California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, RTC is a nonprofit public charity carrying out a program of technical assistance and public education.

RTC is looking for interns interested in working on environmental and public policy issues. Interns will provide assistance to the program, development, communications and the administrative department. Job assignments will consist of professional and administrative support. Interns will participate as full-time staff members including attending staff meetings, retreats and social gatherings. Hours are flexible to accommodate class schedule(s) or other commitments. Generally hours are four days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Summary of this Opportunity
Program Internships are full- or part-time. As a small office of three, opportunities abound for volunteers to get involved in a multitude of projects and to assist staff to make it feel like we are really an office of 20! Volunteer assignments are flexible depending upon a volunteer's interests and skills. A sample of current office needs includes: Trail & Greenway project and policy research, fielding and answering technical assistance calls, in-house library and resource development, grant writing and research, developing educational workshop programs, and fundraising strategies etc.; project support (e.g. helping with community outreach, public meetings). General administrative support (clerical, office management, etc.). Let us know what you want to do!

Positions are unpaid though interns will enjoy the benefits of working in downtown San Francisco, in the casual but professional Western Regional Office
. The office is conveniently located in San Francisco's financial district, just blocks from bustling Market Street and the landmark, pyramid-shaped Transamerica building. Surrounded by professional offices, retail stores, restaurants and galleries, the office is serviced by multiple MUNIlines and the Montgomery Street BART station. Nearby cultural attractions include the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the SF Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of African Diaspora, Yerba Buena Gardens, Sony Metreon and the trendy SOMA (South of Market) neighborhood and Mission District.

Qualifications
Qualified interns will be students in undergraduate or graduate programs seeking on-the-job experience, or professionals looking to hone their skill set. In all internships, excellent writing and communication skills are necessary. RTC operates off a Microsoft Office platform, and experience in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook is expected. Applicants should be task-oriented, highly organized and possess a strong interest in environmental issues or related studies including trail development.
