Join Team RTC on Climate Ride

Want to help raise money for Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) and have an amazing adventure? Then sign up for the 2009 Brita Climate Ride, September 26-30, which will see 200 cyclists journey 300 miles in five days from the tip of Manhattan to the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. This year, RTC is one of three beneficiaries for the ride, so through your participation and fundraising you'll help us achieve our goal of having 90 percent of Americans living within three miles of a rail-trail or connecting corridor by 2020.

Along for the ride will be experts in the climate and renewable energy movements. They'll help educate and inspire participants about the science, policies and solutions to the climate crisis. Notable personalities participating in Climate Ride include:

Friis Arne Petersen, Denmark's Ambassador to the United States: Petersen, who will be pedaling the full ride, will also brief the group on the upcoming COP15 United Nations Climate Conference set for this December. One Climate Rider will be chosen for a trip to Denmark for the conference, courtesy of the Embassy of Denmark.

Colin Beavan, aka "No Impact Man": Featured at the Sundance Film Festival in the documentary No Impact Man, Beavan produces a very popular blog about reducing his impact on the Earth and coming up with a happier way of life along the way.

Alison Gannett, world champion free skier, Patagonia Ambassador, founder of The Save our Snow Foundation, and star of Warren Miller ski films: In her free time, Alison converted the first solar-powered SUV plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in the world to get 100-plus miles per gallon. This amazing athlete and climate-change warrior also leads ski expeditions to Bhutan, Bolivia, India and Pakistan to document climate change.

Josh Dorfman, aka the "Lazy Environmentalist": Dorfman has a new show coming out on the Sundance Channel, and he will also return for his second year to show that he can ride 300 miles without training!

Brita Climate Ride is the first multi-day, multi-city charitable bike ride that showcases the bicycle as part of the solution to climate change, and it is the only such event that benefits climate and bicycle-related organizations. The ride is fully-supported by a team of talented leader-hosts, bike mechanics, medics and massage therapists. Climate Ride is also one of the 'greenest' multi-day charity ride events in the world. Riders are asked to bring no bottled water (recyclable water bottles will be used, and filtered water will be provided by the title sponsor Brita). No disposable plateware or cups are used, the support vehicles are hybrids and vans that run on veggie grease, and every effort is made to recycle and compost materials used on the ride.

The cost is a $100 registration fee, and Climate Riders raise a minimum of $2,400 to participate, with proceeds going to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Focus the Nation, and Clean Air–Cool Planet.
