Safe Routes to School to Expand Funding for New States
On October 20, the Safe Routes to School National Partnership (SRTS) announced that it will be expanding the State Network Project during 2010 and 2011. Thanks to a $1.5 million award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 15 new states can now apply for funding to create a SRTS statewide network.
The State Network Project links nonprofit and government leaders associated with health, bicycle/pedestrian advocacy, youth, education and smart growth to create and implement statewide action plans that will allow children to be more physically active and help reduce and prevent childhood obesity.
This project includes a focus on policies that will serve the most vulnerable low-income communities in the state. Special consideration will also be given to the 15 states where the incidence of or risk for childhood obesity is the greatest: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.
How to Apply Applications for SRTS funding are due Friday, November 20, 2009, by 5 p.m. EST. Nonprofit organizations and universities are eligible; applications via e-mail only. For specific instructions, please see the call for applications to download the application form.
