A Movable Celebration

On Sunday, October 5, in honor of the trail's recent induction to the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame, the Minuteman Bikeway held a "rolling" celebration from noon to 4 p.m., at four different locations along the 11-mile trail. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's Northeast Regional Office Director Tom Sexton joined the horde and presented a Hall of Fame sign to trail leaders at each stop.

"The rolling aspect was certainly a unique way to draw attention to the Hall of Fame designation, and it was just pulled off so well," says Sexton. "It made it fun for everyone, and there were probably 400 people attending the various events at each point along the trail."

The activities began at the Cambridge trailhead, which is located next to the Alewife T Station.  Highway Commissioner Luisa Paiewonsky was the guest speaker, and she highlighted the new 250-bike capacity cage, complete with key card entry.

The affair continued to Lexington where the local trail founders reminded the crowd that the name of the rail-trail is actually the Minuteman "Commuter" Bikeway, and on any weekday it's very apparent that the trail lives up to its name. The Lexington celebration was the largest by far, with close to 200 on hand for the presentation, and it included several tents displaying bicycle and trail-related products and activities. The day wrapped up in Bedford at the trailhead and featured the newly restored train depot train car—Boston & Maine Railroad Budd Rail Diesel Car #6211—which serves as a meeting and education facility.
