Every year, American Trails sponsors a photo contest to highlight the beauty and diversity of the nation's National Recreation Trails. Their contest provides awards in several categories, and the 2009 winners were recently announced. Of the 17 categories in which awards were presented, eight of the photo winners were from rail-trails, including:

 Equestrian Trails
 Health and Fitness
 Arts and Interpretation
 Rail and Canal Trails
 Innovative Facilities
 Environmental Features
 Flora and Fauna
 Scenery and Natural Features
 Historic Features

This year, Carl Knoch, manger of trail development for RTC's Northeast Regional Office, won two awards for images captured on his backyard pathway, the
Heritage Rail Trail County Park in York County, Pa. His shots won in the "Equestrian Trails" and "Health and Fitness" categories.

"The trail is only a mile and a half from my home, and I always take my camera along when I go for a ride or a walk," says Knoch. "
The image of the four horseback riders passing a bicycle parked along the trail while the cyclists rested on a bench was a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I saw the horseback riders coming, dismounted my bike and took some shots. Same with the senior citizens walking on the trail near New Freedom (pictured at right)."
