Modesto Virginia Corridor
Years: 2000-2003

Location:
Modesto, Calif.

Prepared for:
City of Modesto

Partners:
Callander Associates Landscape Architects, Inc.

Project Deliverable:
Master Plan

Project Description:
The Virginia Corridor began its first phase of construction in 2005. The 4.2-mile rail-trail along a former Union Pacific right-of-way will be constructed in seven phases over the course of a decade, providing a trail system through downtown Modesto and to existing Hetch Hetchy, Peggy Mensinger and Tuolumne River Regional Park trails. The trail will enable pedestrians, bicyclists, in-line skaters and others to access sites such as Modesto Junior College's east campus, Roosevelt Junior High School and Roseburg Square, as well as adjacent residential neighborhoods. Phase III of the trail was completed in July 2008, from College Avenue to Roseburg Avenue. The City of Modesto has hired a consultant to design the section from Granger to Bowen Avenues, including a new pedestrian & bike bridge over Briggsmore Avenue.

Project Description:
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy worked with the city and Callander Associates as part of the planning team that produced the master plan. Modesto's five rotary clubs have made an unprecedented commitment of $500,000 in funds, materials and labor to develop a section of the trail as a park between Roseburg and Orangeburg avenues. This section will feature donated lighting, benches, picnic tables, kiosk and landscaping, including a plaza.
