Orange Blossom Trail Years: 2001-2004
Location: Cities of Redlands and Mentone, San Bernardino County, Calif.
Prepared for: The Rail-Trail Project of the Redlands Conservancy
Partners: Redlands Conservancy; City of Redlands; California Department of Health Services Center for Physical Activity
Project Deliverables: Grant Application; Community Visioning Workshop; Capacity Building for Trail Advocacy Group
Trail Description: The proposed Orange Blossom Trail will transform an east-west corridor once used by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and the historical Zanja irrigation channel to create an 8.5-mile multi-use trail through the communities of Redlands and Mentone, connecting to the 110-mile Santa Ana River Trail (SART). In March 2008, the project was presented to the Redlands City Council for its support.
Project Description: Rails-to-Trails Conservancy worked with the Redlands Conservancy and the city of Redlands to prepare a proposal for statewide grant funding, and to plan and conduct a Community Visioning Workshop in September 2004. The Redlands Conservancy has been organizing the community to support trail efforts, raising money, and providing outreach and education at local events. The trail will connect five existing parks and one future park, four elementary schools, one middle school, three high schools, the University of Redlands, the city's new sports complex, and a new senior center and library in Mentone.
