Trail Description:
In 1991, the Southern Pacific Railroad abandoned the Mission Creek line traversing San Francisco. Local advocates seized on the unique opportunity to revitalize this historical corridor to meet the changing needs of this post-industrial neighborhood, a dense mix of light industrial, residential and academic uses. In June 2002, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted to approve the Mission Creek plan, and directed the San Francisco Transportation Authority to move the project forward.
Project Description:
Recognizing the potential of this corridor, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) teamed with the city of San Francisco, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and a local nonprofit to produce the Mission Creek Bikeway Concept Plan, a vision document which provides technical analysis of the corridor, and outlines the opportunities and obstacles to developing the pathway. RTC led an extensive outreach process that included public meetings, interviews with stakeholders and convening a technical advisory committee. RTC also partnered with developers to include the bikeway in their plans, and worked with the board of supervisors to pass a resolution approving the concept plan and directing staff to dedicate resources to the project.
