The Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program
Bike/Walk Pilot Profiles for the four Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program communities:
A key victory for active transportation in the 2005 federal transportation bill SAFETEA-LU was the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program (NTPP; Sec. 1807). The NTPP funded four pilot communities—Marin, Calif., Minneapolis, Minn., Sheboygan, Wis., and Columbia, Mo.—with $25 million apiece to build and complete active transportation systems, thereby shifting substantial numbers of trips from driving to walking and bicycling.
Interconnected active transportation systems decrease congestion and improve the health and environment of communities by providing new choices to people for everyday travel decisions.
For more information on the four pilot communities, please see www.smartmobility.us or the Federal Highway Administration's page on the NTPP.
