RTC's Trail Assistance Program
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's (RTC) Northeast Regional Office manages a Trail Assistance Program that provides small amounts of funding to rail-trail projects in Pennsylvania. The program helps trail organizations or municipalities that need to make small improvements to their trail. Work can frequently be done by volunteers but may require some financial assistance for the purchase of materials. The Trail Assistance Program is driven by existing RTC projects, including the annual Greenway Sojourn and developing regional trail systems in Pennsylvania.
Funded projects are intended to promote the use of the trail either through an increase in users or through an increase in actual trail miles. Grant recipients must provide a 50-percent match. All funding for the grants comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.
In 2011, RTC's Northeast Regional Office awarded financial assistance in the form of mini-grants to the following projects:
West Penn Trail: $11,000, foot bridge over a swale.
Hoodlebug Trail: $12,905, asphalt surfacing and an interpretive kiosk.
C & I Trail: $10,000, foot bridges and knotweed treatment.
Roaring Run: $5,000, contribution toward a .7-mile section of new construction.

Schuylkill River Trail: $20,000, composting toilet.
Armstrong Trail: $6,000, wayfinding signs and posts.
Back Mountain Rail Trail: $5,000, culvert and footbridge.
2008
Lebanon Valley Rail-Trail: $5,000, resurfacing at drainage culvert.
D&H Rail-Trail: $7,000, reconstruction of bank along Starrucca Creek.
The Lower Trail: $5,000, trailhead accessibility improvements.
Ghost Town Trail: $6,843, new trail construction between bridges.
West Penn Trail: $5,000, interpretive signage.
Schuylkill River Trail: $4,410, asphalt improvements for drainage remediation.
Armstrong Trail: $2,810, new trail map for users.
