| | Caltrans Grants Provide Funding for Trail Planners:
Created to promote strong and healthy communities, economic growth and environmental protection, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Planning grants provide funding for a wide variety of bicycle and pedestrian projects around the state. Eligible proposals must fall under one of the categories of environmental justice, community-based transportation planning, partnership planning or transit.
Last fiscal year, more than $5.5 million was allocated to projects in the environmental justice and community-based transportation planning categories alone. Recently awarded projects include $187,050 for the City of Oakland to identify and develop traffic-calming measures and transit improvements in the highly populated residential and commercial Harrison-Oakland corridor; $241,600 to the City of Chula Vista/South Bay Partnership to improve facilities to make biking and walking a safe and accessible option for children to get to school; and $80,000 to Calaveras County to help draft a "rural livable community plan."
