| | RTC Celebrates Opening of San Clemente Coastal Trail
Dozens of trail supporters and local officials gathered on the beach in San Clemente, Calif., to celebrate the opening of a new 2.3-mile rail-with-trail. The paved San Clemente Coastal Trail, which parallels an active rail line used by Amtrak's Coaster line, offers convenient access to the beach and spectacular views of the Pacific coastline and bluffs. Laura Cohen, director of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's Western Regional Office, spoke at the trail dedication ceremony on October 3, along with members of the San Clemente City Council, officials from Coastwalk and the State Coastal Conservancy. Many years in planning, the San Clemente Coastal Trail had to address multiple, challenging design issues in creating a trail that is, in many places, sandwiched between an active rail line and steep coastal bluffs. "It is a strong example of how persistence and creativity can pay off in a beautiful, safely designed trail that accommodates the needs of trail users, beach goers and the railroad," says Cohen. And with its rustic design, the trail largely blends into the coastal environment. The San Clemente Coastal Trail is one of the newest members of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's National Rail-Trail Network.
