In Thanks for Your Help...

Once the GPS receiver and data are returned to us, we will process and check the data for accuracy. We will then send the data back to you in a format you can use in your CADD/GIS program. As a way to say thanks, we will acknowledge you and your organization on our Web site as well.

Help Us Make a Nationwide Network of Trails a Reality
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Needs You!

The act of transforming an unused rail corridor into a trail is a complex process. Everyday, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy works with communities and partners like you to create a nationwide network of trail systems for the public.

Maps and the geospatial data that support them will touch every aspect of our work — from trail building to trail policy. Additionally, RTC plans on publishing all open and project rail-trails, as well as unused railroad corridors, through dynamic maps which will be freely available to the general public on our site.

With your help, our online mapping will allow users to find rail-trails anywhere in the nation! The spatial database will also help RTC and the trail community achieve the goal of 90 percent of Americans living within three miles of a trail system by 2020.

How You Can Help Map:
We need your help to map your local trail(s) with a GPS receiver. If you need to borrow a GPS unit please contact
GPS@railstotrails.org, and we'll arrange to have one shipped to you.

The specifics of what we require are covered in our trail mapping document. In general, we need a GPS tracklog and specific waypoints for each trail. Waypoints include restroom, drinking fountain, and parking facility locations, as well as surface changes, bridges, and start/finish points.

If you have your own GPS receiver, please feel free to use it! All that we ask is that your GPS receiver be capable of collecting the above data, and has the necessary software tool to download that data to a PC so it can be sent to us.
