Advocacy Tool: "Community Trails—A Benefit to All":

To assist groups in Maine to make their case for a rail-trail from Calais to Bangor, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy created a fact sheet to help them promote the benefits of rural trails to the public. The resulting four-pager provides a concise and convincing overview of the benefits—economic, health, recreation, and transportation—based on studies of trails around the country and in Canada. The fact sheet touches briefly on trail management and maintenance and provides case studies of three success stories: the George S. Mickelson Trail in South Dakota, the Mesabi Trail in Minnesota and Elroy-Sparta State Park Trail in Wisconsin.

Despite its references to the state of Maine, Community Trails—A Benefit to All (417K )could serve as an advocacy tool for just about any trail proponent.

And that trail in Maine? Under development now, the eventual Sunrise Trail will extend about a hundred miles, forming the northernmost section of the proposed, Maine-to-Florida East Coast Greenway.
