| | San Clemente Beach Trail Opens:
Thanks to the recent opening of California's newest rail-with-trail, accessing San Clemente's beautiful beaches is now exponentially safer. More than two million people visit San Clemente's public beaches every year. But before the 2.3-mile San Clemente Beach Trail opened, reaching the sand for many beach goers meant illegally hopping over the Lossan Railroad corridor, part of the second-busiest inter-city rail line in the country, at numerous unmarked crossing points, or using the tracks as a temporary—and highly dangerous—pathway. Indeed this need for safer coastal access provided the initial spark for the trail. By streamlining available crossing points into a series of secure, modernized links to the beach, the San Clemente Beach Trail planners created protected routes to and along the coast from North Beach to Calafia. The result today is a spectacular beachfront pathway and recreational amenity that brings the California Coastal Trail, a 1,300-mile hiking trail hugging the California seashore, one step closer to reality. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) has been an active proponent of this trail since 2000, teaming with advocates and local government agencies to ensure that the project received the approvals necessary for its completion. RTC staff also participated in letter-writing campaigns in support of the trail, which San Clemente's City Council initially rejected in 1999 in response to public opposition.
