Portland State University to Host Cutting-edge Trail Design Workshop:

The Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation (IBPI), part of Portland State University's Center for Transportation Studies, is hosting an all-day professional development course on trail design on October 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Portland, Ore. "This course combines the best of in-class learning with an [on-the-ground] tour," says George Hudson, former trail planner and designer for the City of Portland. "To top it off, we'll actually be applying what we've learned in a hands-on design [meeting] with a community trails group in Portland. We think this course will have a high level of technical learning but also be a lot of fun."

Hudson, who will teach the workshop along with Steve Durrant and Mike Rose of Alta Planning + Design, is one of the leading trail and bikeway designers in the United States. He has worked exclusively on alternative transportation projects for the past 12 years. The highly interactive program includes a two-hour classroom overview, a four-hour walking and bus tour of the Portland trails system, and a three-hour design workshop in which  participants will develop specific solutions for a missing trail segment along the Willamette River in northeast Portland.

IBPI has tailored the course for urban and transportation planners, landscape architects, designers, engineers, advocates and others with a hands-on interest in trail planning and design. The cost for the workshop is $250, and includes morning coffee, snacks, lunch, transportation and course materials. Registration deadline is October 12.

To
