Rail-Trail Project: Central California Traction Line
Location: Sacramento, San Joaquin Counties Length: 27 miles Endpoints: Sacramento to Stockton
The Central Valley Rails-to-Trails Foundation is teaming with the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) and cities along the railroad right of way to convert the unused tracks from downtown Sacramento to Lodi into a trail. The entire corridor encompasses approximately 45-miles and terminates in Stockton. The 18-mile section from Lodi to Stockton is currently active and runs regular freight service, although opportunities for a rail with trail along this portion could have future potential.
Currently, there are few safe places to ride a bike or walk along the rural streets of these budding communities south of Sacramento. There is wide support from residents along this corridor including those from Wilton, Sheldon and Herald who are in need of a regional trail offering greater connectivity, broader recreational opportunities and alternative modes of transportation and commuting. The current effort is for support of the 27-mile section to be converted to a rail trail, while discussions have addressed opportunities for light rail and recreational rail activities on this portion in coordination with a trail effort.
