About our Internship Program
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is the nation's leading advocate for trails and the only national organization devoted to converting unused railroad lines into multi-use trails. RTC is dedicated to connecting people and communities by creating a nationwide network of public trails. With headquarters in Washington, D.C., and offices in California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, RTC is a nonprofit public charity carrying out a program of technical assistance and public education. RTC is looking for interns interested in working on environmental and public policy issues. Interns will provide assistance to the program, development, communications and the administrative department. Job assignments will consist of professional and administrative support. Interns will participate as full-time staff members, including attending staff meetings, retreats and social gatherings. Hours are flexible to accommodate class schedule(s) or other commitments. Generally hours are four days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Summary of this opportunity
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has underway a four year project to support the Federal Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program. Under contract to the four Pilot Communities through arrangements wit the Federal Highway Administration, RTC is charged with delivering a set of some 18 communications tasks.  One important task is the development of a private website for use by the managers of the four pilot community projects.  This websit, although initially private, may be opened to the public as it matures and as demand may arise outside in the larger nonmotorized transportation community.  The Website has been established at www.smartmobilty.us and makes use of Joomla open source web architecture.

RTC seeks an intern for the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Project.  Duties will consist primarily of population the various sections of the website with appropriate national and local legislative and regulatory documents, professional reports and journal articles covering nonmotorized research, news items on developments around the world in nonmotorized transportation facilities and services, links to web resources useful to the management of nonmotorized programs. Conferences, meetings and other events of potential benefit to project managers, and other information as needed.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about developments in this cutting edge program that is designed to demonstrate the extent to which biking and walking can carry a significant portion of the nation's transportation load and represent a major portion of the transportation solution.  If successful, the Pilot Program will for the first time document the impact of increased nonmotorized mode share on congestion, energy use, better health and cleaner environment.

Requirements:
Know how to use Joomla or similar web-design software and be comfortable handling graphic, text and tabular materials in a website environment.

RTC operates off a PC/Microsoft Office platform, and experience in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook is expected. Applicants should be task-oriented, highly organized and possess a strong interest in environmental issues or related studies in sustainable transportation, public policy and bike/ped/trail developments.

Benefits:
Positions are generally unpaid, though interns will enjoy the benefits of working in downtown Washington, D.C., in the casual but professional RTC national office. Easily accessible by the Metro on the red, orange and blue lines, the office is located in the heart of the West End, nearly equidistant between the Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle stations. Nearby cultural attractions include the Smithsonian, historical monuments, and the trendy Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan neighborhoods.
