Job Location

This position is located in RTC’s national office in downtown Washington, D.C., and is easily accessible from Metro’s red, orange, silver and blue lines. However, due to COVID-19 staff are telecommuting.

Job Description

This position will build off of RTC’s rich history of utilizing GIS to advance our mission. As a member of the Esri Conservation Program, RTC leverages an integrated system of desktop, web and mobile GIS tools and services to provide data-driven insights and solutions for staff across all departments, our trail-building partners, elected officials and the general public.

The GIS Analyst will work closely with RTC’s programmatic team as well as within a GIS services team to provide support across the organization through geospatial analysis and mapping that advances our TrailNation™ projects as well as the mission and goals of the organization, including but not limited to: trail and active-transportation network connectivity and accessibility, trail network equity, mapping and database management of trail networks, and other relevant projects and initiatives. The analyst will be responsible for translating their findings into easily digestible maps, apps, charts, graphs and presentations. 

This position reports to the Director of Research and will serve on a GIS services team working closely with the GIS Specialist to collaboratively provide broader GIS support across the organization. The analyst will devote 75% of their time to supporting programmatic needs and, together with the GIS Specialist, will dedicate roughly 25% of their time to collaborative projects that serve the broader needs across the entire organization. 

Top candidates will be creative problem solvers who enjoy working collaboratively with others to develop innovative analyses to advance the field of practice within trails and active transportation networks. Excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills are essential to listen to and interpret technical and nontechnical user requests and clearly communicate technical ideas to both GIS users and nonusers.

Desired Background and Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate for this position will hold a master’s degree in social, statistical or geospatial sciences, or a related field, with an emphasis on applied research using geospatial data. Three years of applicable job experience may be substituted for a master’s degree. A GISP Certification (Certified GIS Professional) is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with the following:

  • Creating, editing, managing and evaluating complex network datasets
  • Spatial and statistical analysis
  • Using spatial and network analysis tools in ArcGIS Desktop to answer strategic questions
  • Creating, managing and sharing content in ArcGIS Online, preferably via an organizational account/capacity, to include building configurable applications such as dashboards and ArcGIS StoryMaps
  • Creating presentation-quality custom cartographic products
  • Creating custom models or scripts in Python JavaScript or Arcade to evaluate and manipulate geospatial data

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, time management skills, attention to detail and shared leadership skills are also required.

Work Environment

Normal office setting with low to moderate noise level. We will work with successful applicants to solve technology needs to ensure a positive remote work experience.
