Thursday, June 7, 2018

Networking Breakfast and Registration

7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, Atrium

Plenary: Planning for Equity

8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, Memorial Hall

Past transportation and land use decisions, coupled with the effects of long-standing structural racism, have created significant and systemic inequities in communities across America. Explore how new approaches to planning, community building and development are emerging with the intention of righting these wrongs—many with trails as a key component of equitable transportation strategies.

Topic Sessions

9:40 - 11:00 a.m. Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, Various Locations

1Creating Healthier Places for Healthier People

Room 415

Access to trail systems provide the opportunity to build routine physical activity into daily routines and, in the process, stem the incidence of chronic diseases. This panel will showcase examples of health-sector leadership in driving trail network development and provide insights into the public health case for building trail connections.

3Listening Session

Memorial Hall North

RTC wants to hear your perspectives about the most pressing issues facing the trails and active transportation community. We serve as a resource to the broader trails, walking and biking movement, but we look to you, the local leaders, advocates and trail builders, for the insights we need to provide the right support at the right time. Please join us in a “campfire” listening session—a facilitated discussion guided by attendees—about our collective efforts over the next decade to drive forward a vision of trails at the heart of healthy thriving communities.

2The Equitable Development of Trail Systems

Room 411

Trail systems produce a wide variety of economic, health and environmental benefits. But these benefits won’t be fully realized unless they are enjoyed by all residents of the community, regardless of race or income. Join this session to explore different approaches and experiences gained from community outreach efforts in Baltimore City and trail development planning in the City of Milwaukee. Participants will also partake in a dynamic discussion about this important topic.
