In 2003, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway Company asked for public opinion regarding whether or not the railroad corridor should remain active for transportation purposes. The Puget Sound Regional Council voted unanimously that it should be preserved for transportation. This study attempts to decide the best mode of transportation for the corridor, including staying with the current freight train usage, enhancing the current rail system, adding a commuter rail, adding high capacity transit (HTC) and removing rails altogether to accommodate wide bicycle pathways. This study explores these options in short-term, mid-term, and long-term time intervals. This study wasconducted by HDR Engineering, Inc. for the Puget Sound Regional Council.
