Completed with a team from the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate different approaches to lighting at pedestrian crosswalks to improve pedestrian visibility and detection. Testing in a number of light conditions and considering initial cost, electricity and maintenance costs of each system evaluated, researchers recommend ideal and improved infrastructure for pedestrian safety.
