Urban Pathways Initiative (UPI) is a program of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) that advocates for equitable investment in vulnerable communities to promote the health, transportation and environmental benefits of trail use. UPI provides community-based assistance to groups and municipal agencies which promote or develop pathways intersecting low-income communities.
This report highlights the findings and recommendations from RTC involvement with the Connecticut River Walk and Bikeway in Springfield Massachussetts. As a part of UPI, this report covers both important demographic and social factors currently surrounding the trail, and identifies significant landscape barriers that limit access to River Walk and Bikeway in Springfield. It additionally identifies recommendations for community engagement with residents of Brightwood, the nearby medical community, the Springfield Parks Department and the city of Springfield’s municipal leaders for greater use of the Connecticut River Walk and Bikeway.
