When Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) named Florida's Brian Smith one of the 25 inaugural Doppelt Family Rail-Trail Champions, it was in recognition of the years of labor and expertise he had given to the creation and expansion of the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, one of Florida's most popular and unique urban pathways.

Still he continues to give.

Using the $1,000 Doppelt Family pass-through grant he received as an RTC Rail-Trail Champion, Smith is funding the installation of a set of navigational signs along the Pinellas Trail to promote the communities it passes through.

A savvy trail advocate with decades of planning experience, Smith understands that wayfinding and informational signs are a sometimes-neglected key to boosting a trail's utility and helping businesses along its route take advantage of the trail traffic.
