Snow has yet to fall in Washington, D.C., but here at RTC, we’re already getting amped for the spring trail season! The date is set—the fourth annual Opening Day for Trails will take place on April 16, 2016. And with the momentum of the trails, walking and biking movement barreling full steam ahead into the new year, we expect this year’s events to be bigger and better than ever.

Last year, more than 18,000 people pledged to get out on Opening Day to shake off the winter cobwebs and celebrate trails! From a stewardship event along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail in Pittsburgh to a ribbon cutting and trail excursion on Baltimore’s Jones Falls Trail, trail enthusiasts rolled and strolled in style last year. And with support from REI, RTC was able to expand our Opening Day events in key locations.

We’re pleased to announce that REI is supporting Opening Day in 2016—sponsoring events coordinated by RTC’s five regional field offices (in partnership with their local REI stores)—ensuring that even more trail users across the country will be able to participate this year! From California to Ohio to Florida and beyond, the collaboration between our RTC and REI is sure to produce some of the country’s best Opening Day celebrations!

In the coming months, we’ll be highlighting some of our 2016 host partners with stories of how they’re impacting the health and wellbeing of their fellow citizens. As you may already know, there is a lot of work that goes into trail development, but the payoff—incredible trail networks that bring us closer to our family, our friends, our health and our communities—make it all worth it.

As RTC continues to make the case for active-transportation infrastructure like rail-trails and greenways, we need trail lovers to show their support, both for their favorite trail and for the entire movement. And there is no better way to show that support than getting out and using those trails! So start getting excited for Opening Day, and stay tuned for more!
