Nothing signifies a fresh start to spring like a little bit of spring cleaning! This year on Opening Day for Trails, Friends of the Riverfront and its volunteers are welcoming spring by engaging the community through stewardship events on Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Heritage Trail.

On March 28, 2015—people around the nation will be getting out to celebrate their favorite pathways and kick off spring in honor of RTC’s third annual Opening Day for Trails. As Opening Day approaches, we're pleased to bring you this great example of how a trail in the San Francisco Bay Area is getting people where they need to go—and helping to preserve the region's environmental legacy and natural beauty.

As we lead up to Opening Day for Trails 2015, we’re pleased to highlight another great example of a community doing great work on the ground to make their trails great places to walk and bike. Spring is a time of transition, longer days and, for many of us, enjoying that glorious sunshine we’ve been deprived of for the last few months! In Indianapolis, however, the change in seasons comes with another change for trail systems around the city: extended hours for trail use!

March 30 is Opening Day for Trails, and April 1 is the start of National Public Health Week. The convergence of these two events is no coincidence - while people may think of them as pathways for transportation and recreation, trails are now widely acknowledged to be one of our most effective, inexpensive and proactive public health interventions.
