In Oregon, Historical Trolley Line Reborn as Rail-Trail

Posted 05/26/12 by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in America's Trails | Tagged with Heritage and Restoration, Oregon

National Trails Day, June 2, is really shaping up as being a big one for rail-trails. In northern Oregon, the people of Clackamas County are getting ready to celebrate the opening of the much-anticipated Trolley Trail, a six-mile multi-use trail that follows a historical streetcar line from Milwaukie to Gladstone through the heart of Oak Grove.

British Columbia Celebrates Reopening of Historic Trestle

It was especially pleasing to hear from our rail-trail friends north of the border, who told us about the recent reopening of an historical trestle that now connects the two formally separated sections of the Cowichan Valley Trail through the spectacular forests and former settlement communities on Southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

It was great to see the Poughkeepsie Journal give such hearty props to the community volunteers responsible for the restoration of the Hopewell Depot train station in Hopewell Junction, New York.

Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, Connecticut

When it comes to layers of history, few pathways can top the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. This central Connecticut corridor started life as a waterway, then turned into a railroad, then became a multi-use trail. Lately, it's become a crucial link in an ambitious 3,000-mile greenway from Florida to Maine.

A Pocket-Sized Piece of History From the Katy Trail

For the Spring/Summer 2012 issue of Rails to Trails magazine, we had asked our readers, "What is your favorite part about rail-trail history?" One of the most memorable responses came from Gloria Ballard of Nashville, Tenn., who wrote about making a surprising connection between family history and rail history while researching a rail-trail excursion in Missouri. We thought we'd share her story!

Several Rail-Trails Featured in New Book About Preservation Successes

We like to call rail-trails the ultimate recycling project. They preserve thousands of miles of historical rail lines and uphold the railroad legacy of transporting millions of people and goods across the country. Countless hours were invested in the construction and maintenance of those original railbeds, and rail-trails keep the corridors intact and in the public domain for future generations to use and enjoy.

Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail, Nevada

Looking for a safe bet in Las Vegas? You won't find it at the gaming tables or the slot machines in casinos along the Strip. But if you head just 30 miles southeast of the city toward Hoover Dam, you'll find a sure winner in the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail (sometimes referred to as the Historic Railroad Hiking Trail).

High Hopes for the Harsimus Embankment

Posted 09/12/11 by Jake Lynch in Building Trails | Tagged with Heritage and Restoration, Legal Issues, New Jersey, RTC in Action

Standing next to the towering walls of century-old brownstone, looking up at the mist of sunlight pouring through wild foliage above, the vision for what the Harsimus Embankment could one day become forms easily.
