Grand Tetons Proposal Your Chance to Support Trail Access in America's National Parks

Posted 01/13/14 by Kelly Pack in Taking Action | Tagged with Local Organizing, Wyoming

Right now the National Park Service is considering a proposal for the completion of trail loop in a section of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming known as the Moose-Wilson Road corridor. We believe this project would demonstrate the great value of nonmotorized trail access, and complete trail loops, in America's national parks, and pave the way for trail systems in parks elsewhere.

Pedaling The D: Young and Savvy, Detroit Locals Behind the Bike Boom

Posted 11/07/13 by Rhonda Romano in Trail Use, Taking Action, Success Stories | Tagged with Local Organizing, Michigan, Urban Pathways, Young Champions

I was blown away by how much great stuff is happening in Detroit when we visited the city for our Cleveland/Detroit city swap earlier this year. But one of the initiatives really left an impression on me: Detroit Bike and Brunch.

Michigan's Dequindre Cut Greenway

Everyone has heard about Detroit's troubles: the bankruptcy, the population decline, abandoned buildings and urban decay. What's not often heard is the story of the strength, resilience and pride of Detroiters. Underneath the rubble of bad press, hope grows as a revitalized riverfront and developing trail system are changing the way people think about the Motor City. A signature component of this movement, the Dequindre Cut Greenway, is itself a Cinderella story.

EYE ON: Illinois' Bloomingdale Trail

Posted 10/09/13 by Laura Stark in | Tagged with Design Strategies, Featured Magazine Articles, Illinois, Local Organizing, Urban Pathways

At nearly 20 feet above four northwestern Chicago neighborhoods, the Bloomingdale Trail (a.k.a. The 606) will be a park in the sky. It's a lofty project to be created from an elevated rail line that once was referred to as "an overgrown linear jungle." Plans for the rail-trail include a dramatic facelift, featuring art plazas, entertainment venues, flowering trees, winding nature walks off the main trail, an astronomy observatory, and benches where trail users can rest and enjoy the views.

Illinois' Constitution Trail - a Backbone of Thriving Communities

Posted 10/03/13 by Garry Little in America's Trails, Success Stories | Tagged with Illinois, Local Organizing, Trail Communities

For almost 25 years the Town of Normal and the City of Bloomington have been working together to build a linear park treasured by the community that provides residents and visitors with a variety of terrains and experiences. Now a connected web of trail weaving in and throughout "Blo-No," the Constitution Trail is known and loved as one of Illinois' most important trail systems.

Illinois' Old Plank Road Trail

Posted 10/01/13 by Laura Stark in America's Trails | Tagged with Illinois, Local Organizing, Overcoming Opposition, RTC in Action, Trail Destinations, Trail of the Month

Traveling along the tranquil Old Plank Road Trail today, you would never know the site was once the cause of heated debate and a contentious struggle lasting 20 years. The paved 22-mile rail-trail now offers a canopy of oak trees and sugar maples rustling overhead, delicate prairie grasses that stir with the passage of bicyclists, and soft purple wildflowers that peek up through the green underbrush.

Los Angeles is really surprising a lot of folks lately, with tons of great energy for biking and walking initiatives emerging from a sprawling city usually known for being very car-centric.

A Girl From Motor City Forgoes Four Wheels for Two

Posted 08/24/13 by Erica Flock in Taking Action | Tagged with Local Organizing

This September, about 200 adventurous Americans will pedal their bikes from New York City to Washington D.C. raising thousands of dollars for organizations like Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) and drawing attention to the world's most pressing environmental issues.

Projects of the People - Determined Locals Behind Elevated Rail-Trail in Philly

Posted 07/17/13 by Jake Lynch in Building Trails | Tagged with Local Organizing, Pennsylvania

The effort of local residents to make good use of the derelict Reading Viaduct through the heart of downtown Philadelphia "is one such manifestation of the new urban. It is as much about celebrating and unearthing the great industrial archaeology that built Philadelphia as it is about building new paradigms of public spaces for the new millennium."

Building is Believing in a Future You Can't See Yet

Posted 06/17/13 by Jake Lynch in Building Trails | Tagged with Local Organizing, Pennsylvania

This past weekend, within the space of just a few hours, I found myself face to face with both the "before" and the "after" - one community trying to imagine a popular destination rail-trail in their area, and another already living the dream.

Beyond the Ribbon-Cutting, What You Sometimes Don't Hear About How Trails Get Built

Posted 06/04/13 by Jake Lynch in Building Trails | Tagged with Local Organizing, State and Federal Programs

The determined grassroots effort in Danvers, Mass., to build their local rail-trail was typical of the kind of "can-do" attitude we often see behind successful rail-trail projects.

Posted 05/28/13 by Rhonda Romano in Building Trails | Tagged with Corridors and Railbanking, Local Organizing, Michigan

It is terrific to see the people of Branch and St. Joseph counties in southern Michigan continuing to pursue their ambitions for saving a 20-mile section of rail corridor and building a public trail.
