RTC's Work in Camden Catches On In Boston

In February of this year Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) hosted a gathering of urban planners and transportation experts in Camden, N.J., to look at the bike/ped improvements that have been made in that city and the exciting work being done to better connect Camden with Philadelphia and the region.

Washington's Iron Horse State Park is one of America's iconic rail-trails. Following the path of the former Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul-Pacific Railroad east out of Seattle, the 82-miles of the Iron Horse pass through the stunning scenery for which the Pacific Northwest is famous, from the base of Rattlesnake Mountain all the way to the Columbia River.

By the time she's a college senior, sophomore Bridgette Conboy will have a healthier option than driving or taking a shuttle bus: she will be able to bicycle or walk on a 1.3-mile rail-with-trail between North Carolina's Belmont Abbey College and the town of Belmont.

Michigan Communities Eager to Support Planned Rail-Trail

In 1994, Michigan businessman Fred Meijer funded the purchase of the first rail-trail right-of-way in the state. That purchase became the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail, and since then, the philanthropy of the Meijer family has made possible one of the best trail networks in America.

Last year we wrote about the tremendous grassroots effort out of northeast Massachusetts to develop the Danvers Rail Trail. The Danvers Rail Trail Advisory Committee rallied the town's business community to support the extension of this popular community asset through a mile-marker sponsorship program, generating thousands of dollars for trail maintenance and creating a strong trail community in the process.

South Carolina Company Builds Trail for Employees

From Mt Rainier to Puget Sound - Relay Race Raises Money for Foothills Trail

The history of the race and the rail-trail are inextricably intertwined. When the first Rainier to Ruston Rail-Trail Relay was held in 1992, its goal was to raise money to build the Foothills Trail and help connect Mount Rainier with Puget Sound along an out-of-service section of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

Grassroots Go-Ahead: Massachusetts Communities Take On Their Rail-Trail Ambitions

In the state's northeast, the Danvers Rail Trail Advisory Committee has launched a mile-marker sponsorship program to fund the maintenance and improvement of the Danvers Rail Trail. The advisory committee is a town-appointed group that has directed development of the 4.3-mile rail-trail since the town of Danvers leased the corridor from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in 2008.
