The rail-trail movement is global. Though the United States boasts the most extensive network of developed rail-trails, as well as rail-trail organizations and advocates, all over the world citizens are recycling underused rail corridors into vibrant places of recreation and transportation.

When Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) launched our trail-finder website, TrailLink.com, way back in 2000, its uniqueness was based on a simple premise: Combine our own extensive trail experience with the input, reviews and photos of thousands of trail users around the country-and with all external submissions vetted by RTC's own expert staff. The result was a free trail-finder service unmatched in terms of coverage but also accuracy.

Linda McKenna Boxx has been the driving force behind the Allegheny Trail Alliance (ATA) since its inception in 1995. Her ability to inspire and unite the efforts of a disparate group of cities, counties, volunteer groups and federal, state and local agencies, is widely credited for the tremendous success of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), which since the time of her involvement has become one of America's most popular rail-trail destinations.

Without the foresight and advocacy of Robert Hammond and Joshua David (right), there would be no High Line. Hammond and David founded Friends of the High Line in 1999, inspired at first by a desire to save the unique trestle structure from demolition, and later by the enormous possibility they saw in an elevated public greenway.

Resounding New Evidence: America Wants Biking and Walking in Transportation Future

A national poll released this week found that 83 percent of all respondents support maintaining or growing the federal funding streams that enable active transportation--sidewalks, bikeways, trails and bike paths.

RTC Helps Spread the Joy of Riding to Baltimore Students

Sometimes, it doesn't feel like work! Rails-to-Trails Conservancy's (RTC) trail development team members Kelly Pack and Lindsay Martin have been traveling up to Baltimore, MD., these past few weeks to help run an after school program teaching local kids some valuable bike skills, important bike safety, and even how to look after and maintain their machines.
