Posted 06/02/14 by Ken Bryan in Building Trails, Taking Action | Tagged with Florida, Rail-with-Trail, Walkability and Bikeability

They're calling it "All Aboard Florida," and we think a high-speed train service between Miami and Orlando would be terrific for Central and South Florida. Construction of the All Aboard Florida (AAF) project is expected to begin this year, with service starting in 2016.

Spring is upon us, and perhaps no region is more thankful than the South, hit especially hard by an unusually brutal winter. Residents of The Big Peach are more than ready to head out on the Atlanta Beltline to soak up the warmer weather. In a city once known as Terminus, the BeltLine trail network is a re-envisioning of its railroad past for a new wave of pedestrian and bike-friendly urban design.

No Bike/Ped Crossing of the Susquehanna in Maryland? It's Time to Change That.

Posted 01/28/14 by Kelly Pack in Building Trails, Taking Action | Tagged with Maryland, Rail-with-Trail

Did you know that in the state of Maryland there is no safe way to cross the Susquehanna River on foot or by bike? That's why Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is supporting the effort of our friends at the East Coast Greenway Alliance to urge the Maryland Department of Transportation to include a bike/ped pathway in an upcoming redesign of the 108-year-old Susquehanna River Bridge currently used by Amtrak.

Rail and trail is a match made in heaven. All over the world there are great examples of rail operators and trail users working together for mutual benefit. Sometimes that involves trails connecting with light rail stops, or it could be a train carrying riders back to the trailhead so they can enjoy a one-way ride.

The setting is perfect - the unique coastal landscape of California, the shimmering Pacific Ocean, the calm, protected waters of Monterey Bay. When it's complete, some seven years from now, the 32-mile rail-with-trail running along the coastline a short trip south from San Jose, California, will without doubt be one of the most remarkable rail-trails in the country.

When the sunset-hued Golden Gate Bridge first opened more than 75 years ago, it was the engineering marvel of its time. Just north of San Francisco's famed bridge lies an equally impressive transportation corridor for a new era. When complete, the aptly named SMART Pathway will include the most miles of bike and pedestrian trail alongside active railroad, 52, in the country.

From City to Coast, Salmonberry Corridor has Huge Potential for Oregon

Posted 05/08/13 by Barry Bergman in Building Trails | Tagged with Oregon, Rail-with-Trail

Support is building for the development of an 84-mile section of underutilized rail-corridor between the western reaches of Portland and the Oregon coastline. Known as the Salmonberry Corridor, the line that once carried the Port of Tillamook Bay railroad now presents an opportunity for what would certainly be one of the country's most spectacular rail-trails, and a trails tourism lifeline for the region.
