Massachusetts is teeming with rail-trails and railroad history. Its 93 multiuse trails totaling 461 miles draw visitors to every corner of the state.

In the 20 years since its construction, Rosemary Laporte has hardly missed a day on the Manhan Rail Trail, a paved 6-mile route across Easthampton in western Massachusetts. Rain or shine, she starts her day around 6 a.m. with a leisurely stroll along the beloved trail. Most days, she walks with a friend.

Among this year’s class of new rail-trails is a pathway that’s key to a 275-mile route across Michigan, a Virginia stunner with a nearly milelong railroad tunnel, a new segment of the multistate East Coast Greenway in Massachusetts, and a Pennsylvania rail-trail that’s part of three vast regional trail systems.

In October, a new slate of 30 trails in 25 states were ushered into the ranks of top outdoor destinations as 2020’s National Recreation Trails by U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

The goal of the New England Rail-Trail is to unite Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut by multipurpose trail.
