Some 110 years later, thanks to the efforts of four southern Vermonters, the Manchester Rail Trail guides visitors on the remarkable journey of that marble from quarries in Dorset to the finishing mill in Manchester to New York City.

Nearly three decades after its inception, the need for the RTP has only intensified as trail development accelerates nationally. The country has increased its number of rail-trails from around 500 to more than 2,200.

During the pleasant summer months of northern Vermont, the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail offers an extraordinary experience as it journeys through a verdant river valley tucked among the forested slopes of the Green Mountains.

Fall comes later to the states farther south—Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island—generally arriving in mid-October and lasting to early November.
