Submit Trail Marker Idea
All interested communities and trail organizations with potentially compelling and applicable historical ideas are encouraged to apply using the form below!
RTC and the William G. Pomeroy Foundation are pleased to present Trails Across America, a grant program designed to celebrate and preserve history along America’s multiuse trails. Through the program, RTC and the Pomeroy Foundation are excited to collaborate with communities across the nation to select, develop and install premium cast-aluminum historical markers featuring unique places, people and history along greenways, canal towpaths and rail-trails—linking communities while honoring their pasts.
RTC will facilitate the application and production processes for the markers, with communities encouraged to submit their ideas via an online application form. Ideas that meet the criteria for selection will be developed in partnership with RTC, the community and the foundation, which will also serve as the program’s funding sponsor.
This new program builds on the success of a previous historical marker collaboration in 2023–2024 highlighting sites along the 3,700-mile Great American Rail-Trail. We are pleased in 2025 to expand the initiative to highlight stories of local and national significance (taking place on or before 1956) along the nation’s 42,000 miles of trail corridors.
Check out these “Helpful Hints” to learn more about the types of ideas that may be successful for marker consideration, the marker specs, and the steps involved in the process.
