First Avenue Road Diet The project will take a "fat" street and make it leaner, safer, multi-modal and more productive. Work will involve resurfacing and restriping of the entire length of First Avenue converting it from four (4) through lanes with no auxiliary left-turn or right-turn lanes to a three (3) lane configuration with one through lane in each direction and a center two-way left-turn lane and areas of painted median to facilitate movements into the existing commercial and office driveways along the roadway. The remaining roadway area will be converted to 5?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ bicycle lanes on each side of the road. Also proposed as part of the project is a midblock raised pedestrian crosswalk including pedestrian signals, signs and markings. The crosswalk treatments will be designed to maximize pedestrian safety and will include advanced in-street yield to pedestrian markings accompanied by overhead flashing beacons and high visibility markings. Saint Marys Covered Bridge This project involves the rehabilitation of Huntingdon County Bridge No. 8 (St. Mary's Bridge) over Shade Creek in order to prolong the life of the bridge while maintaining the historical aesthetics of the structure. This project includes sandblasting and painting of the existing steel beams and other exposed rusted steel superstructure components. The deteriorated timber components will be replaced and all the remaining timber components will be cleaned and painted. The entire timber wearing surface, the timber curb, and the nail laminated deck will also be replaced. Also, any loose tin roof sheets will be secured and a tar coating applied to the entire roof. Any cracks in the existing substructure will be repaired by pressure mortar pointing and the anchor rods will be tightened or replaced. The contractor will be required to jack-up the structure to repair/replace the bearings at both abutments and repair a sag in the truss. Roadway work will be limited to milling the existing approach roadway and laying a new layer of bituminous wearing surface for a distance of 10 feet from both ends of the bridge and other miscellaneous construction.
