This reassurance contributes to the perceived quality and enjoyment of the trail in addition to protecting people using the trail.
At the same time, it is key to be honest if emergency response may take some time, especially in more remote places, or locations where services are readily available but there are sections that are not as accessible. In these cases, providing notice allows users to plan ahead accordingly.
Tourism-relevant safety tools and protocols must be comprehensive, easy to understand and highly accessible. Common approaches include:
- Emergency Location Markers (e.g., U.S. National Grid (USNG), 911 markers): These markers must be installed at consistent, strategic intervals, serving as unambiguous, universally understood location identifiers. They allow a person in distress to convey their precise location to emergency responders (e.g., 911 dispatchers) without requiring complex navigation knowledge. The use of standardized systems, such as the USNG, ensures interoperability between trail management, users and local emergency services.
- Clear and Highly Visible Emergency Contact Information: Contact details (e.g., local 911, nonemergency trail patrol, specific local land manager numbers) should be prominently displayed at key access points and integrated into trail apps or printed maps.
